Well, I was in Angel Fire over the Memorial Day weekend and wanted to post my update on the progress at the Country Club. The old building has been gone for some time, which we all knew. Now, they have excavated the entire site including digging up into the hill behind where the country club once stood. It's amazing how much bigger the site is now that they've done that. They have started laying down the foundation for the retaining wall that will keep that hillside in place. The site where the actual building will be has been excavated and leveled as well as multi-tiered. I understand the foundation is to laid in the next few weeks dependent on weather.

Overall, they appear to be doing things right, letting the soil settle and making sure they build the new Country Club the right way.

The course itself is in pretty decent shape for so early in the season. Some of the tee boxes need to come in ... but overall, it's in ok shape. The bunkers were tremendous. I understand they did some work on them after the close last fall and it shows. They were amazing to play out of - although I hate to admit how often I was hitting out of them.

So, all in all - so far so good with the new Angel Fire renaissance.

Exciting news from Chile Pepper Bike Shop!

We're opening a second location at Angel Fire Resort in Angel Fire, New Mexico. The new shop will be open this year by Memorial Day Weekend in May, just in time for the Chile Challenge Mountain States Cup Race May 23-26, 2008. The shop’s operating period will be May through September each year. The new shop will be a full-service shop offering rentals, repair service and biking apparel.

Angel Fire Resort offers lift service gnarley DH terrain as well as cross-country trails for all riding styles and abilities. With their world class trails everyone is sure to have a great ride! Angel Fire is host to Mountain States Cup races, NORBA Nationals and UCI World Cup races.

We are needless to say SUPER excited to be opening a shop at Angel Fire Resort. With the resort’s plans to make Angel Fire a premier gravity fed mountain bike destination, we are looking forward
to offering our continued quality of bikes and service to visitors to Angel Fire. Also, with the riding background of Ryon Reed, shop owner, the style of riding offered at Angel Fire is right up his
alley. Ryon also hopes to be involved in new trail building at the resort and plans on spending his days off at the bike shop shoveling dirt on the hill and taking DH runs.

So, if you’re looking for a new place to ride. Come to Angel Fire and stop in the shop and say hello, the shop will be located at the base of the Chile Express chair lift at the base of the mountain
near the ticket offices. We will be launching a website for the Angel Fire location and hope to have it up and running by late April. Please keep checking back to our site for updates on the new shop
as well as what bikes we will be offering at the Angel Fire location.

I have a question. I plan on spending a little time in Angel Fire and the surrounding area this summer. It seems like most of y'all that post here are very familiar with the area. I am curious what the roads are like in and around Angel Fire. Obviously in February and March, the roads weren't really in any condition to be observed for the type of surface they have. Between Angel Fire and Eagle Nest, there seemed to be a pretty decent sized shoulder, but I don't think it continued the entire way between the 2 points. From the slopes at Angel Fire I could somewhat see some of the neighborhood roads, but didn't really have an opportunity to investigate them.

So my question is, where are the best areas to ride bikes (or for my purpose, Trikkes) around the "Enchanted Circle"? Where are the widest shoulders, nicest pavement, etc.? If anyone knows and can give me some ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. I love to ride distance and I love to ride hills, so any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!!

After the Christmas disaster of really, really, really bad snow conditions....mostly due to the lack of snowmaking due to many technical problems (and big crowds over skiing what was open).... it seems that a season retrospect and a look forward to next season (and beyond) needs is in order:

- 1st priority.....Finish the snowmaking pond at the top of the mountain!!!!
- 2nd priority.....Greatly improve the snowmaking operation!!!
- The two base facilities (front and back)....wow, what can you say......this needs some serious upgrading/replacement.
- A new lift on the backside is badly needed to increase terrain and relieve crowding during peak times.....lift lines were over 30 minutes at times.
- open on the backside for Thanksgiving (weather permitting)....need a parking lot on the backside.
- walking village with lots of shopping....this will also really help with summer crowds

With Taos opening for snowboarding.....without the above AF can not hope to continue to draw in big numbers their remaining niche (families and groups) without these improvements.

OK....there is my 2 cents.....I'm sure management already knows this but I wanted to say it anyway......I feel better now.
Gate bashers looking to earn the stars and stripes in four-cross racing, listen up: USA Cycling will hold the 2008 national championships in the discipline at New Mexico’s Chile Challenge, held May 26 at Angel Fire resort.

The move comes a year after four-cross — a UCI-recognized event in mountain biking — was absent from USA Cycling’s regular one-day national mountain-bike championships, held at Mount Snow, Vermont. USA Cycling instead awarded stars-and-stripes jerseys in the discipline of dual slalom last year. That move came after Mount Snow allowed promoters to build only a dual slalom course on its lower slopes, insisting that a four-cross course would require too much construction.

Angel Fire resort still owns a sizable four-cross course leftover from 2005, when the resort hosted a stop on the UCI world Cup. The national championships race will be open to American riders only. Four-cross national titles will be awarded to elite men's and women's fields only.

The Chile Challenge is part of the Mountain States Cup.
