ANGEL FIRE, New Mexico (January 6, 2005) – Does flying down a mountain at speeds of up to 70 M.P.H. on a snow shovel sound frightening? Not to the snow sport world’s most brazen competitors. They’re gearing up for Angel Fire Resort’s 30th Annual World Shovel Races, held February 18-20, 2005. The concept of racing down a hill on a snow shovel began in the early 1970’s as lift operators looked for a unique and quick way to return to the base area after a long day of work by using their work shovels to ride down the slopes. The concept spurred the first race in 1975 and now, thirty years later, it is one of the world’s most intriguingly bizarre winter events.
Over 200 competitors will embark on the New Mexico ski resort for three days of races down the 2,066-foot slopes. Racers from ages 6 to 106 will strap on their helmets and speed down the mountain on their own shovels or aerodynamic shell made out of anything from bathtub parts to sails from a boat, to compete in six different classes, based on age and gender. The top three fastest competitors in each class will receive cash prizes and trophies along with gift certificates from local retailers.
Angel Fire Resort guarantee’s this will be the biggest Shovel Race yet, as they celebrate 30 years of competing with activities for the racers, their families and fans of the world-class event. The three-day festivities will include race clinics, snow shovel sculpture contests, children activities and evening entertainment including live music.
Angel Fire Resort is currently accepting registrations for both the production and modified competition, as well as handling press member RSVPs.
