Angel Fire Resort to Host First-Ever ‘Chain Reaction’

ANGEL FIRE, New Mexico (December 8, 2005) – Angel Fire Resort together with Snowboard Magazine, announced it has designed and will host a completely original snowboard competition, dubbed the “Chain Reaction,” on Saturday, February 25, 2006. The competition is open to all ages, with separate male and female divisions, where teams will vie for $20,000 in total prize money. The event is part of a weekend long celebration of snowboarding in New Mexico.

The Chain Reaction will combine the best elements of freestyle, relay and boarder-cross racing. Participating teams are made up of two members. The first member of the team hits the course in four person heats. As soon as the first team member crosses the finish line the second team member starts from the top of the course. The first team to get both members across the finish line wins.

This year’s course will launch with an extreme urban theme. Riders will fight elbow to elbow as they hit the course jumps, rollers and berms, along urban park features such as a buried school bus, interstate merge lanes, bridges over a pond and a city skyline. One of the most challenging sections of the course will be the “toilet bowl.” This is a 360-degree snow bank which riders enter on the top, arc in a tight turn and fly out of at the bottom.

“We are constantly looking for events that push the athletic edge. The Chain Reaction competition will definitely do that,” said Brandon Peterson, special events manager, Angel Fire Resort. “When you come to Angel Fire you have a choice. You can watch the best in mountain sports or take part in the best in mountain sports.”

Along with the Chain Reaction, other events over the February 25-26 weekend include a riding clinic featuring top pro riders, board demos from the leading board manufacturers, live music and the 10th annual Free Tacos! party sponsored by Experience Snowboards. Additional partners include Albuquerque radio stations 94 Rock and 104.7 The Edge, and the New Mexico Xtreme Sports Organization.
