Upcoming: 40th Annual Shovel Races
Get your shovels waxed, we’re about two weeks away from the 40th Shovel Race World Championship at Angel Fire Resort.
Before we jump into what’s happening on race weekend, let’s take a look at Shovel Racing throughout the years.
Shovel Racing has humble beginnings dating back to the early 1970s. At the end of a long day in the lift shack, lift operations employees would sit on their snow shovel and ride it to the back to the base area. This soon evolved into lifties racing each other and keeping time to see who could make it to the bottom fastest. Little did they know they were creating a whole new sport.
Not long after Shovel Racing took off, racers creativity started running wild. Imagining all the ways a racer could make it down the hill faster, The Modifieds class was born. Racers would spend all summer designing, building, and hoping their unique vehicle would secure them the fastest time on race day. The number one rule was that a shovel must be in contact with the snow at all times, other than that, it was up to the racers imagination. Unfortunately, the Modified class got a little too dangerous for even X Games standards and has since been retired.
