5 Essential Tips for Beginning Mountain Bikers

May 16, 2024

It’s probably not a huge surprise that learning a new skill is good for you . . . and your kids. A quick Google search will provide thousands of articles and studies about how acquiring a new skill helps with cognitive abilities, mental health, confidence, and more. So if you’ve ever considered mountain biking as your next hobby, now would be a great time to start learning. And we here at Angel Fire Bike Park are ready to help new mountain bikers each step of the way.

Embarking on the exhilarating journey of mountain biking is a thrilling experience, but it can also be daunting for newcomers. With rugged terrains, steep inclines, and unpredictable trails, it’s important to equip yourself with the right knowledge and skills to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride. Below are some essential tips to help beginner mountain bikers navigate their trail adventure.

1. Invest in the Right Bike

Before you hit the trails, make sure you have a reliable mountain bike that suits your riding style and body size. Opt for a bike with appropriate suspension, sturdy tires, and a durable frame. It’s wise to have a professional from a bike shop or a skilled mountain biker help you set up on your bike. No bike yet? No problem! If you’re just starting out, you can rent a bike at our bike shop. Angel Fire Bike Shop bikes are maintained by some of the best mechanics and techs in the Southwest. With their expert advice and knowledge, they can adjust your bike to give you the best experience.

2. Get (Some) of the Gear

You will need safety gear such as a helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads, and appropriate footwear (flat-soled shoes are best). But if you’re just starting out and not quite ready to purchase all the things, you’re in luck because Angel Fire Bike Park offers gear rentals as well.

3. Start Slow and Build Your Skills

Mountain biking is a skill that takes time to master. Begin with easy trails that match your skill level and gradually progress to more challenging ones as you gain confidence and experience. Focus on mastering basic techniques such as braking, shifting gears, and maintaining balance before attempting advanced maneuvers. Make sure to take a lesson.

Riding mountain bikes can be a very different experience than any other common riding, so taking a lesson from the get-go is recommended. At Angel Fire Bike Park, we pride ourselves on providing you with the skills you need for a lifetime of enjoyment on a bike. Our lessons are designed to help you get to riding better, faster, and more confidently on all terrain on our mountain.

4. Stay Hydrated and Fuelled

Mountain biking can be physically demanding, especially on longer rides, in hot weather, or in high altitudes. Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly throughout your ride and carry snacks to maintain energy levels. Pack lightweight, nutrient-rich snacks such as energy bars, nuts, and dried fruit to fuel your adventures. Nothing good happens when you’re being hungry or dehydrated.

5. Stay Safe and Be Prepared

Prioritize safety at all times by wearing appropriate protective gear, riding within your limits, and being aware of your surroundings. Carry a basic repair kit, including a spare tube, tire levers, pump, and multi-tool, to address minor mechanical issues on the trail. Familiarize yourself with basic bike maintenance tasks such as fixing a flat tire or adjusting brakes. Find even more safety information here.

And just to be safe, take Angel Fire’s Bike Shop and Bike Patrol phone number with you in case of emergency. Save this number in your phone: (575-377-4290).
