In the heart of Angel Fire Resort, you’ll discover a beautiful spring-fed, high-mountain lake that spreads across 28 scenic acres. This picturesque locale is Monte Verde Lake, open every summer through September each year. The lake offers a fantastic array of recreation options for visitors of all ages. Most importantly, this hidden Angel Fire Resort gem is the perfect place to create treasured mountain memories with family and friends.
Travel plans typically include ziplining, biking, golf, disc golf, scenic chairlift rides, and resort camping at the resort. However, our Rocky Mountain playground is also home to some lesser-known accommodations and amenities like Monte Verde Lake. These amenities provide plenty of adventurous fun for all of our visitors.
Things to Do at Monte Verde Lake
If you’re looking to spend warm summer days soaking up the sun, Monte Verde Lake is the ideal getaway destination for you and your loved ones. Lake and Boat House availability varies depending on the date. Check our website for the most up-to-date details.
Choose from a range of outdoor pursuits to enjoy during your stay with us at Angel Fire Resort.
Fishing
Anglers of all ages will have a blast reeling in brown trout from the lake. We regularly restock with trout to ensure a successful day of fishing for everyone.
We’re open daily for shore fishing, and you can purchase fishing permits at the Boat House. If the Boat House is closed, head to the membership office at the Angel Fire Country Club to obtain permits for yourself and anyone joining you. Permit fees range depending on age. While fishing, you must wear your permit so that it remains clearly visible at all times.
You may also opt to rent a fishing boat from the Boat House and venture out on the water to land your catches.
Boating
Our Boat House rents a wide variety of watercraft you can take out onto the lake, including fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats. Rental fees range, as do age requirements. Every person in the boat must wear a life vest at all times and know how to swim proficiently.
Monte Verde Lake is also BYOB — Bring Your Own Boat — with no permits required.
Other Water Sports
There are plenty of other ways to enjoy the cool, crystal-clear waters of Monte Verde Lake. Guests can rent Hobie pedalboards and SUP boards from the Boat House. Anyone using these boards must be at least 12 years old, wear a life vest at all times, and be comfortable with swimming. Don’t miss our safety and instructional video for first-time paddleboard users.
Hiking
While there are many hiking trails to discover in and around our mountain, the Monte Verde Lake Loop Greenbelt is a perfect starter course. This family-friendly, mile-long trail circles the lake, giving you ample opportunities to stop and admire the Northern New Mexico landscape on your journey.
Even better, the Monte Verde Lake Loop Greenbelt is now more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Our crews have recently made improvements to the trail, including updated signage, maps, and bridges.
Relaxing
There’s nothing quite as tranquil as spending the day on the shore listening to the lake waves lap the shore. Bring a good book and plenty of sunscreen as you disconnect from all of your devices and enjoy a calm afternoon dedicated to letting loose and enjoying yourself.
