Fall at Angel Fire Resort runs from mid-September through late October, when the aspens of Northern New Mexico’s Moreno Valley turn brilliant gold, glowing against bright blue mountain skies. As the season progresses, that golden glow moves to lower elevations, lighting up the cottonwoods along the nearby Cimarron River and Rio Grande. The color window lasts only about a month — this guide covers exactly when to visit, the best ways to see the fall colors, and how to plan your stay.
Once you’ve picked your dates and know how you’re getting here, use the sections below to inspire your perfect fall getaway.
When Do the Leaves Change in Angel Fire?
October is peak leaf-peeping season in the Southern Rockies, with the first waves of color arriving in mid-September. Each stretch of the season brings a different show, so time your trip to catch the trees you most want to see.
| When | What's Turning | What You'll See |
|---|---|---|
| Mid–late September | First color arrives | Early glimpses of gold peeking through the green canopy |
| Early October | Aspens | Brilliant yellow groves blanketing the high mountain slopes |
| Late October | Cottonwoods | A final dazzling display of yellow along creeks and bottomlands |
Helpful tip: Color timing shifts a little every year. Check our live webcams before you travel to see exactly where the color stands on the mountain.
Ride the Scenic Chairlift Above the Fall Colors
The best view of fall in Angel Fire is from the Chile Express: As the longest scenic chairlift in the USA, it brings you alongside the most vibrant leaves as it carries you 2,000+ feet above the Moreno Valley. At our 10,677-foot summit and on your way back down, you'll soak in sweeping views of nearby and faraway mountains bathed in brilliant hues, including golden aspen groves, Wheeler Peak (the tallest mountain in New Mexico), and vistas that stretch past Eagle Nest Lake all the way to Colorado.
At the top, grab lunch on the wrap-around porch at The Summit Haus, play a round of disc golf (included with your lift ticket), then ride the chairlift back down or hike down through the color if you're feeling adventurous.
Hike and Bike Through the Aspens
Fall is a beautiful time of year to explore Angel Fire's trails. Hikers can take on the Enlightenment Trail — a maintained trail dropping more than 2,000 vertical feet from the summit — or enjoy the fall color on the Oeste Vista, Lady Slipper trails or other Greenbelt Trails.
On two wheels, riders of every level can catch the color. The Angel Fire Bike Park is the premier downhill bike park in the Southwest, with 60+ miles of trails to explore, and the Moreno Valley is home to a growing network of cross-country trails. Bring your own bike or rent everything you need at our Bike Shop.
Golf in the Gold
Tee off at 8,600 feet on our par 72, 6,653-yard, 18-hole championship course — surrounded by the southern Rocky Mountains and, at this time of year, framed in brilliant yellow aspen. Crisp mountain mornings, thin air that adds distance to your drives, and fairways lined with fall color make autumn the most spectacular season to play Angel Fire.
After your round, settle in for lunch at Par and Grill or celebrate with dinner and expansive mountain views at Elements at the Country Club.
Helpful tip: Fall tee times are limited as the season winds down. Book online early to lock in a peak-color round.

Drive the Enchanted Circle
Some of the best fall color in New Mexico is just beyond the resort. The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway is an 85-mile loop through picturesque canyons, mountains, mesas, ranchland, and even an old mining ghost town — with hiking paths, rest stops, and overlooks the whole way around. Angel Fire Resort sits right on the loop, making us the perfect basecamp for a fall driving day.
Want to go deeper? The 1.5 million acres of the Carson National Forest surround the resort with even more colorful trees.
Helpful tip: Bring your camera and give yourself a full day — the pull-offs and overlooks are half the fun, and the light on the aspens is best in the morning and late afternoon.
